The Zymo team was born as an innovative initiative for the production of second generation bioethanol, using genetically modified bacteria to degrade lignocellulosic waste from the sugar industry in Guatemala, one of the largest in Latin America. Our objective is to promote the use of bioethanol as a fuel, without resorting to raw materials that could be used for food, thus promoting a sustainable alternative within the energy sector.
We are two young beneficiaries of a scholarship that recognizes the 50 best high school students in the country, with training in chemical engineering and molecular biotechnology. Our approach combines knowledge in chemical processes, genetic modification and biofuel production, with the purpose of developing efficient and scalable solutions for the transition to renewable energy in Guatemala and the region.
